Maureen Jennings created a small pocket in the English country side that you find yourself falling into as the pages turn. The novel highlights the reality of war on everyday life, the way regular people adapt to their changing environments and, reminds the reader about the enemies that are hiding in plain site in our midst. The thing about history and time periods is that we can only extrapolate so much to what life was like; in historical fiction we can get a real feel for a time by the creative developments of the author to create a world for us using historical events as a scaffold behind the story. The novel has a central circle of characters that are well rounded, a secondary circle that is developed but not as well rounded and the last circle are those that are more flat in nature. However, in this novel I found that the flatness was not a hindrance but rather a more life like aspect. This novel is exciting, keeps you guessing, and surprises you right at the end. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
