Kieran and Mia return to the small coastal town in Tasmania where they grew up to help Kieran’s parents clear out their house for a move. Events in a storm twelve years earlier—for which Kieran has always felt responsible—resurface when another young girl is found dead on the shore.
Harper keeps tensions high throughout the twists and turns of this mystery, grief an ever present factor in so many lives, almost too much. It’s a dangerously beautiful place. Good read, although not liked as much as earlier ones written by her.
Great setting and enough twists and turns to keep you interested.
As with Harper’s previous books, the story is hugely atmospheric, with a single individual being the center of the story. For some readers, the descriptions and characterizations may seem tedious, but Harper fans will recognize her style and appreciate the story.
I'm huge fan of Jane Harper's previous three books (The Lost Man, The Dry and Force of Nature) and this one does not disappoint! Like in her previous books, the mystery is addictive and you just need to know what happened so it is hard book to put down. She does such a spectacular job of keeping you hanging right until the end and despite all the different ideas you may have come up with to solve the mystery, essentially the who-dunnit, the actual answer will most likely surprise you . I love that all her books are set in remote areas of Australia which are beautiful in their unique ways. A great choice for those mystery lovers out there!
I am so disappointed! I LOVED Jane Harper's previous three mysteries, as part of their appeal was they were all set in the Australian Outback. Unfortunately The Survivors is set in a beach town in Tasmania instead. In addition, I really didn't care for or about any of the characters. And from someone who reads very few mysteries, I figured out early on who the murderer was.
A page turner. Harper is becoming a reliable read.
There was so much hype surrounding this novel that I think sometimes the press dooms the reader to disappointment. Overall I enjoyed the book, but thought the beginning was slow going and could have been edited. Another vivid example of the pain of years of secrets and lies. Kristi & Abby Tabby
