Wang Yuan is caught between the opposing ideas of different generations. After 6 years abroad, Yuan returns to China in the middle of a peasant uprising. His cousin is a captain in the revolutionary army, his sister has scandalized the family by her premarital pregnancy, and his warlord father continues to cling to his traditional ideals. It is through Yuan's efforts that a kind of peace is restored to the family.

This is part three of The Good Earth, and is another well-written book about China and its people and customs and especially the effect that the twentieth century had on them. We experience their world through the eyes of Wang Yuan, son of Wang the Tiger of the second book. This book could be read without having read the first two novels, since it fills in relationships from the past. One can learn a lot about China, especially as it teeters on the edge of great social change. There could be places where the specific names of cities and more exact dates could be given, but that does not detract from the story.

I tried reading Pearl Buck in High School and found it uninteresting. Now after having gone to China and also getting older, I find Pearl Buck's works fascinating as historical fiction. I fully enjoyed her Trilogy that began with The Good Earth. Plan to read more.
