A closely observed portrait of Agnes, who has reached her early 40s without ever venturing far from home, family or the tight-knit immigrant community in which she was raised by her widowed father. That begins to change in a quietly dramatic fashion when Agnes receives a jigsaw puzzle as a birthday gift and experiences the heady thrill of not only doing something she enjoys, but being very, very good at it.

I went into this one not knowing much and hoping for a competitive puzzling movie in the vein of The Queen’s Gambit. The movie delivered on neither front. However, once I set aside my own expectations, I found this to be a well-paced and subtly performed drama that slowly tells the story of a woman’s midlife awakening to her own agency and desires.

Within this bigger arc, jigsaw puzzles serve as a symbol for bringing control through the process of creating order out of disarray; by acts of focused menial labor, we can calm the chaos of our minds, and find a modicum of control. Like many others this past year, I put together my fair share of jigsaw puzzles. Jigsaw puzzles allowed many of us to find moments of calm through the midst of 2020. Interestingly, this shared experience of the catharsis of jigsaw puzzles allowed me to connect with this movie in ways I never would have if not for this past year.

In the end, Puzzle is an important story about personal identity and agency. Like a jigsaw puzzle itself, it’s not easily seen at first glance, and takes a bit of thought and reflection to truly appreciate.

This movie made me think. A lot. How often do us men have a one dimensional way of thinking about the women in our lives ? Grandmothers, mothers, wives, daughters, everyone has dreams and hopes and goals, at any age. One way to lose these ladies is to take them for granted, and disrespect them. I liked the character portrayed by Ms. McDonald. Got to show appreciation for the ladies in our lives...lest they leave us.

Slow moving. A really bleak representation of being a mother and a wife. I wouldn't want her life for anything. Her "awakening" doesn't go anywhere. It was depressing watching a woman being basically a servant to her family, with no dreams of her own. Considering how self-effacing and timid she seems, (spoiler alert), it's quite a stretch that she would be willing to take a long train ride to the home of a man she doesn't know. She had to go to New York City to buy puzzles? She wasn't living in the boondocks. Don't they sell puzzles pretty much everywhere? All together, a puzzling movie, and difficult to follow the overall point. This movie made me so, so happy I'm not married.

Can’t believe how many comments said it was a lovely movie. Really???? Very sad and depressing.

I absolutely love this movie. Watched it twice and then bought my own copy. The lead actor plays his part so well. I admit that I first saw the movie because I love jigsaw puzzles, but the film is way more than that. It’s a wonderful character development film.

Well done. Interesting portrait of patriarchal blue-collar family where Dad makes all the important decisions and Mom meekly follows along until her break-out transformation. But I couldn’t cheer for her because it seemed to me that she had helped to create the initial situation she was breaking out of. Yes, her husband was rather domineering and strove to keep her in the domestic box, but she had basically created that dynamic throughout their marriage. She gave no push-back until she exploded (which I guess is what often happens) but I felt sorry for her husband who seemed to be a good guy who really loved his wife and was simply following the guidelines, both societal and also the ones that his wife had tacitly agreed to throughout their marriage.

Yes, there was some fantasy about it. But I really got into it. Didn't want it to end.

This was a disappointing film with too many unlikelihoods. Really, this timid woman is going to meet up with a man about whom she knows absolutely nothing especially given his notice’s bizarre request (for a puzzle partner)- and she is going to go to his house, no less? Really, she has never done a puzzle before in her life (she has two grown kids. They know about puzzles.), has no idea where to buy one? She is by no means a stupid woman though we are frequently reminded how sheltered she is, just in case we feel our incredulity is being pushed a bit far. And her physical transformation from an already very attractive woman into a more attractive woman is so cliche. I thought the idea of the movie, being about the metaphor of puzzles and psychological purpose behind puzzling, was very interesting. But the people behind the movie, in my opinion, did not make a good enough story on which to build and support those ideas.

lousy movie; lousy ending. right up there with 'cairo time' where a married white woman gets involved with an interesting man of color but lets him down in the end and holding the bag. it's just wrong to use people like that.
