When award-winning film maker Justine Nolan returns to her childhood home, she finds an envelope in her absent mother's post containing a shocking revelation, which, if genuine, will change everything she believes about her family's recent history, her mother and her adored grandmother, Gabriele. With the support of her twin brother, Justine resolves to uncover the truth. To do so she must travel to Istanbul , a place which holds its own secrets, leading her to a fascinating man who appears to know more than he is prepared to disclose. Yet even when her quest succeeds, Justine is faced with a further mystery: her grandmother's background is not what it seems. Justine is given a book of memories in which the real story unfolds, taking her back to the darkest days of European history, with its suffering and astonishing acts of bravery. At the heart of it lie the final facts of Gabriele's identity -- and her own. The letter from a stranger has brought her not only to the truth about her family but also a chance to heal the wounds of past betrayals, to embrace a new love and new life.

This was a hard one to put down but a fast read. PG for mild sex. No bad language or gore.

Had to read for book club. 100 of the 400 pages were interesting; the story within a story, about WWII. Otherwise, pretty much a waste of time.

I had a tough time reading this book. Just wanted to get through it so I could find out what happened. But I found some of the parts quite unrealistic. I woudn't recommend it to others

Very disappointing book. I kept thinking I was reading Danielle Steel, the writing was so juvenile.

I am a big fan of this author, and I've read every one of her books. This was not only the best book of hers that I've ever read, it might just be the my favorite novel ever. The story line really touched me, and the details of her grandmother's life were so sad. I can't imagine a mother like the one the twins had to put up with either. Highly recommended!
