A week's holiday in a luxurious Yorkshire time-share is just what Scotland Yard's Superintendent Duncan Kincaid needs. But the discovery of a body floating in the whirlpool bath ends Kincaid's vacation before it's begun. One of his new acquaintances at Followdale House is dead; another is a killer. Despite a distinct lack of cooperation from the local constabulary, Kincaid's keen sense of duty won't allow him to ignore the heinous crime, impelling him to send for his enthusiastic young assistant, Sergeant Gemma James. But the stakes are raised dramatically when a second murder occurs, and Kincaid and James find themselves in a determined hunt for a fiendish felon who enjoys homicide a bit too much. -- from cover.

so happy my friend cris has introduced me to a nice english mystery series which has eighteen volumes, and counting. hooray! the story occurs in a collection of timeshares, not technically a locked room but with a finite number of suspects... and potential victims. the actual mystery and motive is not compelling, but this is a good introduction to duncan kincaid and gemma james.

Decent book. I enjoy tea cozy British mysteries, so I look forward to reading more in this series. I do miss Reginald Hill, and Carolyn Graham's writing. They were superb.

A typical British crime story. Something to pass the time until I could find something more enthralling.

1st book in the mystery series of Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James, set in England, contemporary times. As of the most recent title, yr 2016, the Debra Crombie series has 17 titles.
It's important to read the books in the sequence of the series.
Go to Fantastic Fiction.com and enter the letter C for Crombie, then see the titles in sequence of the series. Some of the titles are not held by the SPPL so you will need to order them via interlibrary loan. (MNLink.)
IF you want to READ this particular title, 1st in the series, read as a real book as a paper copy-turn-the pages format vs reading it online, then, you'll need to request this title from Interlibrary loan. (MinnLink). Ask your librarian to show you how to do it or ask the librarian to please order it for you. (no cost).

Scotland Yard superintendent Duncan Kincaid is on a much-needed vacation in Yorkshire when he discovers a body in a hot tub.

Thoroughly enjoyed this first of Crombie's Kincaid and James series. Kincaid tries to take a vacation, he really does, but foul play dogs him even to a time-share. More than one person end up in danger and with the local police being rather prickly, Kincaid's trying to solve the case without actually being on the case. His police partner, Gemma James, takes a break from her 'vacation' of staying home and doing laundry to help Kincaid with some background work and interviews. She shows up at the time-share just in time to help capture the culprit.

This first novel in the Kincaid & James series follows all the rules of the mystery genre. The violence is behind the scene and the language would be considered clean.
