From the acclaimed international bestseller Keigo Higashino (The Devotion of Suspect X) comes a sweeping novel in the tradition of Les Miserables and Crime and Punishment. This is the compelling story of a brutal crime and the two teenagers--Ryo, the son of the murdered man, and Yukiho, the daughter of the main suspect--whose lives remain inextricably linked over the twenty-year search for the truth behind the crime. In Osaka in 1973, the body of a murdered man is found in an abandoned building. Investigating the crime, Detective SasagakI is unable to find the killer. Over the next twenty years, through the lens of a succession of characters, Higashino tells the story of two teens, Ryo and Yukiho, whose lives are most affected by the crime, and the obsessed detective, Sasagaki, who continues to investigate the murder, looking for the elusive truth. Under the Midnight Sun is a complex, psychological novel about crime and its after-effects by one the most read and most accomplished contemporary mystery author. A twisting, compelling work that will astonish and delight Higashino's old fans and new readers alike.

This book a slow starter. Lots of characters build an interesting plot. I had to walk away and read several other books when I got bogged down. I started reading it again today and couldn't put it down. This is not a who dunnit but a why dunnit. Good book. Not a quick read.

I was actually looking for something too long yet interesting. I enjoyed reading the book. There were so many names which I wrote down in the sheet of paper so I was able to understand story better.
As usual his mystery novels are well written. All books are unique , different stories different styles the way story went. It is not good as the devotion of suspect x , but still worth reading. I am big fan of The author. 🙏🏼. I would love to read all of his books.

I read the second two translated novels in Higashino's Detective Galileo series and both of his translated novels from the Detective Kaga series prior to reading this book. The four serial novels were all amazing, with the Kaga novels being my favourites - overall, stellar works by Higashino.

I mention this because I don't really have anything positive to say about this one. Journey Under the Midnight Sun was, quite frankly, disappointing after reading Higashino's other amazing works, with their fascinating twists and turns. The major themes in the novel are inherently not particularly pleasant, and they're not handled in a way that changes that. The finale is disappointing, the plot is somewhat hard to follow, and the characters are difficult to keep track of, especially given the length of the novel.

I gave this two stars because of my own experience, and I wouldn't really recommend it, but I suppose it could be more interesting if you don't mind the dark/depressing themes and are trying for a more psychological thriller theme than mystery novel.

Sometimes you just luck out and grab a book off the shelf that turns into a terrific read. As all characters were Japanese, it was difficult to maintain name recognition. But if you can get past the character name issue this is a book well worth reading. Will look for more books from this author.

Too many characters deterred from the murder mystery plot, making the reading tiresome; so I gave up. Have enjoyed other books by the author.
