An excellent movie well acted and well laid out, accurate to the experience of today's teen (according to my daughter). As a parent I didn't like hearing or seeing everything I was hearing or seeing but if it's for the sake of knowing a bit of what teens go through, it was worth it.

The Edge of Seventeen is one of the best new movies I've seen this year. Though its main character is a teen, I think it could be enjoyed by more of a general adult audience than most teen movies. The cast and their performances are very good. The Edge of Seventeen is rated R for sexual content, language and some drinking - all involving teens.

For her debut feature writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig has channeled the spirit of John Hughes to produce a misfit teen dramedy of surprising depth and candour. Deriving much of her humour from those memories of adolescent awkwardness we all carry around yet never stooping to slapstick or crude innuendo, Craig’s fully fleshed characters live in a real world with real issues—from bad hair to mental health to sexual propriety. Nadine hovers somewhere between whiny teen and troubled woman while older brother Darian quietly suffers through his own problems and mom occasionally goes off the rails (a heartfelt performance from Kyra Sedgwick). Woody Harrelson also stars as Nadine’s history teacher and sounding board—his mordant common sense giving her introverted ego a few much needed slaps—while Hayden Szeto plays a clumsy classmate who sees in Nadine all the things she can’t see in herself. But the film ultimately belongs to Steinfeld, her defensive lashings, self-sabotage, and embarrassingly realistic meltdowns hinting at a deeper vulnerability which touches a chord in those of us who spent our highschool years clinging to the shadows. Nice musical score too, and Vancouver always photographs well.

Interesting movie about how brother and sister can influence each other for either good or bad - a little hug between brother and sister can go a far way to help to keep a positive relationship in the family.

My wife and I really enjoyed this movie. The underlying message is good for every person to hear. We all get caught up in our own lives at times, and we don't stop to think how other people might be experiencing life. We all experience good things and bad, and sometimes our good means another person is experiencing bad. Also, it's really easy to feel like the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Both great messages and made heartfelt in this movie.

Yikes! a self conscious rebellious teenager faced a social situation over the course of two weeks that left her wallowing in self-pity and anger, feeling abandoned by her single mom and only brother, even her crusty father figure teacher and only friend. Hilarious script and excellent acting all around, especially Hailee Steinfeld who also starred as the spunky Mattie Ross in True Grit 2010. She is a real artist, 19 when the film was released.

Many quotes at IMDb including this on teens and their personal assistants:

My entire generation is a bunch of mouth breathers. They literally have a seizure if you take their phone away for a second, they can't communicate without emojis, and they actually think that the world wants to know that they are "eating a taco, exclamation point, smiley face, smiley face", like we give a fxck.
