"The panic unleashed by a mysterious contagion threatens the bonds of family and community in a seemingly idyllic suburban community. The Nash family is close-knit. Tom is a popular teacher, father of two teens: Eli, a hocky star and girl magnet, and his sister Deenie, a diligent student. Their seeming stability, however, is thrown into chaos when Deenie's best friend is struck by a terrifying, unexplained seizure in class. Rumors of a hazardous outbreak spread through the family, school and community. As hysteria and contagion swell, a series of tightly held secrets emerges, threatening to unravel friendships, families and the town's fragile idea of security" -- from publisher's web site.

First one girl, then another, then yet another all experience seizures and other strange symptoms. They all attend the same high school in the same small town, and they're all friends of Deenie, who remains symptom-free. School officials, parents, the police - all freak out, and varied and wild theories are expounded. Nice gothic twist at the end.

I did not like this book and felt that I would not want my teenagers reading it. If a medical scenario were to occur in a school like the one in this book it would not be handled like this. It portrays the public health to be the bad guy here when public health is here to support the public and to ensure the public's safety. It is not a secretive group of powerful people trying to cover things up. Also if a teen poisoned another teen she/he would not be handled so lightly in the judicial system. This books gives a negative impression to kids not to seek help and to keep secrets and to lie. I also think it gives a bad impression of teen girls in general.

The story was not as engaging as I expected. I found the book in the adult section, but it would be more appropriately found in the Teen section. This was much more a drama of teenage proportions.

This was a book that was not expecting much. It turned out to be pretty good. It was definitely a page turner.I was a bit confused by the audience is it for teens. They might be a little turned off by the chapters that focuses on the adults. But is seemed too teen focused for adults. I aslo was a bit disappointed by the ending. Overall it was pretty good.

Weak ending; I was disappointed. Should be labeled for young adults as there isn't much here for adults.

I thought this would be a mystery, but it's more a thriller with a bit of a sci-fi element. Some kind of plague/disease is affecting the teenagers of a quiet, small town and things get weird and tense from there. It's like a high school novel that got hijacked by a genre novel. It mostly works and Abbott has a strong understanding of the teenage mindset. It reminded me a little of Charles Burns's graphic novel "Black Hole," which had a similar plot and "The Age of Miracles," which also used a sci-fi element in an understated way.

Mystery about a mysterious illness that besets a group of young girls at a school. Book is overly long on trying get to point of the origin of this illness. Nothing to brag about here.

You have to wade through sixteen and a half chapters to get to the meat of the story.

It is difficult to get too excited about all this high school drama if one is way past this stage.
I think this book (if recommended at all) should be rated as suitable for YA.

A gripping read that leaves you questioning what is really going. It helps you run the whole gammet of emotions.
