Sacrifice
Book - 2008
Tora Hamilton is an outsider at her new home on the rocky, wind-swept Shetland Islands, a hundred miles from the northeastern tip of Scotland. Though her husband grew up here, it's the first time he's been back in twenty years. Digging in the peat on their new property, Tora unearths a human body, at first glance a centuries-old bog body, interesting but not uncommon. But realizing that the body is in fact much newer, that the woman's heart has been cut out and that she was killed within a few days of bearing a child, Tora, herself an obstetrician, becomes obsessed with finding out what happened to her--even when the police, her colleagues and eventually her husband warn her against getting involved.

Add a CommentA truly amazing, captivating and original storyline. I was mesmerized from cover to cover
SJ Bolton is pretty good at this thriller/suspense-writing thing. A few years back I read "Awakening" by her, and it made me jump out of my seat. I'm not sure why I haven't ventured back into her work for so long, but I thought I'd give "Sacrifice" a try. This book didn't disappoint. Set in the isolated Shetland Islands, Bolton does an excellent job of pulling her reader into the book's remote, oceanic setting. Although the weather is warming up here in real life, every time I picked up the book I wanted a cup of hot tea and a blanket to wrap around myself!
With that said, the story makes some leaps (ok, a lot of them!) that you really have to suspend your disbelief for. But maybe that's a good thing, because the horror that is taking place in this remote location is not something that I hope ever to experience in real life!
I liked this story, set in Scotland's Shetland islands. Though it's coming home for her husband, it's new to Tora. After unearthing a bog body while trying to bury her horse, Tora actively investigates the mystery of the body. And then things get complicated, scary, and exciting.
