Written by Jules Verne, Around the World in 80 Days is a classic fictional novel. The story takes place in the 19th century, following the life of a British gentleman named Phileas Fogg. In spite of being a rich man, Fogg has a simple and monotonous lifestyle. One day, in an argument with another man at the Reform Club he is part of, he bets 20 000 pounds (worth millions today) that he can travel the world in 80 days: something which has never been done before. The story then follows his adventures around the world as he tries to win the bet in a race against time. The story has a slow start, but once it picks up, the plot becomes very entertaining. There are witty dialogues, a variety of characters, and many plot twists that keep readers wondering if he will make it back in time. I really enjoyed the book, and I would give it 4.5 stars. @Riveting_Reviews of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

This is a sort of 19th century version of The Amazing Race. Wonderful little tidbits of colourful history and plenty of misadventure made this a fun and interesting read. For those who enjoy listening, the audio book was really well done.

A fun and quick adventure read, this story highlights the wonders of technology and the advancements of the (then) modern world.

thought I knew the story but it was quite different and more enjoyable than I expected.
I found the reason for the trip strange but then Phileas Fogg was definitely living his life in a fog.
Passeportout was the most interesting character and I found the journey interesting.

Jules Verne was a very educated man who was greatly interested in the world and travel and wrote many books based on his knowledge. He was ahead of his time making the world accessible to many.

read very easily and with interest. not only were you excited to catch a glimpse of where it was you were traveling but you had to be careful not to waste any time and miss your connection. all the while you were constantly reminded of the theft, the bet and just who was innocent or not. very well written. moved well. kept you interest. also delt w/interesting material.

A classic adventure story, Around the World in Eighty Days is a fast-paced story about exactitude, daring, and romance. I have loved it since I was young but only just recently noticed the racist overtones and stereotypes that color the portrayals of peoples and places as Phileas Fogg travels around the world. While still an enjoyable, exciting read, I won’t feel the same way about it anymore.

Amazing book, I love Jules Verne!!!!!!!!!!

good adventurous fun - but the racism/colonialsim of the late 1800s is quite shocking at times.

Charming tale of a stuffy Englishman travelling around the world after a wager from members of his men's club. Adapted (somewhat successfully I think) to film in 1956 starring David Niven as Phileas Fogg. Avoid the 1989 version with Pierce Brosnan as it bears little resemblance to Jules Verne's story.

“Mr. Fogg accordingly tasted the dish, but, despite its spiced sauce, found it far from palatable. He rang for the landlord, and, on his appearance, said, fixing his clear eyes upon him, "Is this rabbit, sir?"

"Yes, my lord," the rogue boldly replied, "rabbit from the jungles."

"And this rabbit did not mew when he was killed?"

"Mew, my lord! What, a rabbit mew! I swear to you—"

"Be so good, landlord, as not to swear, but remember this: cats were formerly considered, in India, as sacred animals. That was a good time."

"For the cats, my lord?"

"Perhaps for the travellers as well!”

“Why, you are a man of heart!"
"Sometimes," replied Phileas Fogg, quietly. "When I have the time.”
