Cody Hoyt, while a brilliant cop, is an alcoholic struggling with two months of sobriety when his mentor and AA sponsor Hank Winters is found burned to death in a remote mountain cabin. At first it looks like the suicide of a man who's fallen off the wagon, but Cody knows Hank better than that. Sober for fourteen years, Hank took pride in his hard-won sobriety and never hesitated to drop whatever he was doing to talk Cody off a ledge. When Cody takes a closer look at the scene of his friend's death, it becomes apparent that foul play is at hand. After years of bad behavior with his deparment, he's in no position to be investigating a homicide, but this man was a friend and Cody's determined to find his killer.

Cody Hoyt is a hot mess and he knows it. When his AA sponsor dies, Cody also knows it is no accident. His attempts to investigate meet many obstacles. The plot includes a group out on an adventure tour in Yellowstone. I love this part of the country, so this book was overall a very entertaining read. I am definitely invested in the Highway Quartet series. Be warned there is a high body count. The narrator is excellent, but listening on audio will make the foul language more prominent.

This book introduces Cody Hoyt, a brilliant cop and alcoholic who is struggling with being two months sober. After losing his job in Denver, he's now back home in Montana and working at the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Department. When he disagrees that a man found dead in a burned-out cabin was an accident, Cody surreptitiously investigates on his own with the reluctant help of his partner Larry. After shooting the county coroner, Cody is suspended by the sheriff. Still investigating, Cody learns that his son Justin is on a Yellowstone Park back trip country with the chief suspect. Box leads the reader on a high-stakes chase with a detective who can barely ride a horse and likes to get people to talk with a bullet to the knee. The author successfully conveys the beauty and danger of the back country while keeping the plot moving with a large cast of characters.

This book is interesting right from the first sentence. I loved the Yellowstone setting. Author used enough description that allowed me to visualize the landscape, but not so much that I was skipping it.

Although I only listened to a short portion of this book, I think the story would have been a good one. However, the language was too profane and was not necessary to the story so I did not finish the book.

The alcoholic cop has been done to death but Box puts a fresh spin on it with Yellowstone Park as the backdrop. The deaths of several AA members throughout the US are linked to a horseback trip through the park. Suspended recovering alcoholic Cody Hoyt finds out his son is on the trip with the murderer. Bloodshed ensues. It keeps you guessing most of the way through.

*** stars. C. J. Box can always be counted upon for a good read. It's not great literature, but this Edgar award winning author crafts characters that you care about and stories that keep your attention. This is what all authors strive for, and many fail to accomplish. Cody Hoyt, while a brilliant cop, is an alcoholic struggling with two months of sobriety when his mentor and AA sponsor Hank Winters is found burned to death in a remote mountain cabin. At first it looks like the suicide of a man who's fallen off the wagon. Hank had 14 years of sobriety and Cody does not believe the man had started drinking again. When he takes a closer look at the scene of his friend's death, it becomes apparent that Hank was murdered. After years of bad behavior with his department, he's in no position to be investigating a homicide. Unfortunately, clues found at the scene link the murderer to an outfitter leading tourists on a wilderness horseback trip into the remote corners of Yellowstone National Park and Cody's son is part of the group.
