A book that is truly a modern fairytale, ‘The Man in the Moon’ is the beginning of a wonderful story of those ever famous, lovely Guardians of Childhood. Though Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman, The Easter Bunny, and many more are all important to children, the Man in the Moon was first!

Beginning with a boy who has never had a nightmare, this book tells of us MiM and his parents as they flew around in the Golden Age. When Pitch Black, The King of Nightmares, hears of this boy, he is determined to destroy his innocence. But little did Pitch know the fierceness of his protectors.

Full of the joy of childhood, this book is a look at the oldest Guardian of Childhood. Weaving through the book is gorgeous artwork that helps to show the full scale of the beauty of this world. Definitely worth reading.

William Joyce has created a series that is a delight for all ages to read.

My four-year-old does enjoy this story, but I'm pretty sure she's missing out on some of the elements the author has included. It would likely be better for an older audience. The details in the pictures are spectacular and the way Mr. Joyce immerses the reader in the world of the Man in the Moon is masterful. I thoroughly enjoy the book each time I read it. Spoiler alert: there is a decently scary portion of the book where main characters die/are eliminated from the plot line. So do read first and consider how little kids will handle that. It's not gruesome, just something that might tap into kids' intrinsic fears.

The Man in the Moon is like those myths which explain why things are the way they are. In this case it is about how the moon we know came to be. Very imaginative and uses a well-known formula; there is a hero who experiences a loss, grows up, and goes on to perform a noble deed. Beautiful illustrations only make this even better.
