The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them all they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it, from garden seeds to Scripture, is calamitously transformed on African soil.

I am not into drama stories, but this one caught my attention and hung on. Until I read Kingsolver's book, I had a one-sided view of the Congo and how the mecenaries rescued it. It ran deeper than that and this novel gave me insight to life in the jungle, the interference from Belgium and the U.S.A. and the endurance of the people. Great read.

I trusted too long in false reassurances, believing as we all want to do when men speak of the national interest, that it is also ours. In the end, my lot was cast with the Congo. Poor Congo, barefoot bride of men who took her jewels and promised the Kingdom.
