There is a fundamental happiness right within our reach, yet we usually miss it--ironically, while caught up in attempts to escape pain and suffering. Pema Ch#65533;dr#65533;n's radical and compassionate advice for what to do when things fall apart in our lives goes against the grain of our usual habits and expectations and confronts us with traditional Buddhist wisdom. There is only one approach to suffering that is of lasting benefit, Pema teaches, and that approach involves moving toward painful situations to the best of our ability with friendliness and curiosity, relaxing into the essential groundlessness of our entire situation. It is there, in the midst of chaos, that we can discover the truth and love that are indestructible.

Included in the book are:

   *  Ways to use painful emotions to cultivate wisdom, compassion, and courage
   *  Ways to communicate that lead to openness and true intimacy with others
   *  Practices for reversing our negative habitual patterns
   *  Methods for working with chaotic situations
   *  Ways to cultivate compassionate, energetic social action

With this book, Pema Chodron helped me find comfort, strength, and resilience during a particularly difficult time of my life. I would recommend this to anyone having a rough time of things.

As a Buddhist myself, it is often difficult to explain certain aspects of Buddhism to those who are unfamiliar with it, and live with the Western state of mind. Buddhism isn't about being a Buddhist, it is about using Buddhism to improve on your own life. Pema is able to explain Buddhist philosophy in a simple, yet beautiful way. We tend to overcomplicate the human experience, and Pema is able to simply it and distill it into its universal and basic structure. I think anyone can benefit from reading this book. Buddhism isn't just for Buddhists. It is about self-discovery.

I am now re-reading this book after several years and find that I discover new insights. A beautiful book to be read slowly and thoughtfully.

A good book for people interested in meditation, Buddhism, or finding new means for accepting change and growing because of life's challenges.

Easy-to-access Buddhist advice. I'm not a particularly spiritual person one way or the other, but this book was comfort food for my soul.
