Teenaged Anne Frank, a Dutch Jew, perished along with most of her family in a concentration camp, but her hopes, dreams, and optimistic outlook has endured through the publication of her diary in 1952. Her diary conveys the precariousness of the Frank family and that of their fellow exiles, the Van Daan family and fussy dentist Mr. Dussel. They spent their time hiding from the Gestapo in a tiny Amsterdam attic.

It moves me to tears.

This is an excellent Academy-nominated film.

Millie Perkins delivers a memorable portrayal of Anne Frank, even if she (Perkins) was twenty years old playing a thirteen year old. She had an innocent quality. To be confined for all that time, starving, terrified, and to come so close to being liberated by The Allies... my God. So, so sad.

Frances Goodrich and Director George Stevens should take all the credit for a great film. "The Diary of Anne Frank" was based on the book of the same name by Frances Goodrich. She did not use the actual verbatim translation of the book to the movie script. Ms. Sullivan had written the scripts to such films as "Its A Wonderful Life" and "Easter Parade". So she was certainly known for her script writing. George Stevens picked a complete unknown to play Anne Frank. His choice was Millie Perkins, who to me has all the innocence the character requires. She is also the right age and a beautiful young lady. He taught her to act of the set and I think the results are magnificent. I would also praise Director George Steven for a great cast from top to bottom. He got the great cinematographer William Mellor to shoot the picture. Although I admit to reading various controversies about the filming of "The Diary of Anne Frank", I think some miss the point. It got the story out to millions of people about the plight of Jewish families living under Nazi control. We mourn her loss, but celebrate her words of wisdom.

The romantic scenes are central to this story of a young girl reaching maturity. The length, and seeming "dullness" of the story enforces the circumstances of the captives' situation--in addition to the fear of discovery that was ever present, the endless days of confinement are effectively dramatized in the film.

Very good, but what's with the romance scenes? I haven't read the book, but it seems a little inappropriate. Not for little eyes. Perhaps I should read the book? Overall I good watch, with supervision.

This movie was overly-dramatic, slow, dull, and boring - and you get to watch a full three hours of it! Of course, I didn't watch the whole thing. It's the kind of movie that's nice to watch in parts or to have playing in the background. The story's good, but this production of it is not.
