"For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland's majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones...about a love that transcends the boundaries of time...and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his .... Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire's spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart...in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising...and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves...."--Back cover.

I love the author's ability to let us peek inside history - from the abbey in northern France to the Scotland's Prince Charles as he tries to take back the throne of England while living in France and shmoozing with his cousin, King Louis, and the other elites of Paris. I enjoyed the look into the hospital for the poor in Paris and growing European alcohol trade. The number of coincidental meetings between characters that re-appear throughout the series is a bit overdone but still enjoyable. I like the new character, Fergus, which the author introduces. He does a good job of bringing another outsider's view of proceedings to the story. I look forward to the next book in the series.

"D'ye think I don't know?" he asked softly. "It's me that has the easy part now. For if ye feel for me as I do for you -- then I am asking you to tear out your heart and live without it."
