This masterful effort by James A. Michener traces the history of South Africa from its original cave dwellers through Dutch colonization to twentieth century apartheid. Helpful genealogical charts included.

A complete history of South Africa, starting with early man, the Dutch East India Company, frontier Dutch settlements which set the scene for apartheid.

If you're familiar with Michener, you know THE COVENANT (Random House, $4.95) can't be contained to just modern day South Africa. Rather, it is an epic with sweeping appeal, from pre-historic cave dwellers to twentieth century apartheid, it leaves no historical stone unturned of this former Dutch colony.
