Voices in the Park is the twentieth book that Anthony Browne both wrote and illustrated. This very original and visually appealing book tells the story of two families that spend some time in the park and unintentionally meet there. The story is told through four voices or chapters in which the four human characters (portrayed as apes) tell their own version of how the day went. We have, on one side, the voices of a mother gorilla and her son, who are taking their dog Victoria for a little walk; on the other side, we have the voices of a father gorilla and his daughter Smudge, accompanied by their own dog.

Each one of these voices is very distinct: the mother gorilla, very tough with her son, does not want to mingle with what she considers a lower class; her son Charles, suffocated by his mother, wants to live and make friends, but is scared of what the world might bring; the father gorilla, unemployed and depressed, loves his daughter dearly and manages to make her happy in spite of their harsh circumstances; Smudge finally, is the only cheerful voice in the book, and knows how to live fully and enjoy everything coming her way.

As dissimilar as each character are their chapters, all of them illustrated differently and showing a very unique style that immediately conveys the personality and wishes of each one of the book’s voices or perspectives with altered lights and colors.

Voices in the Park, a psychologically complex story, is a book on the importance of human connection in our daily lives. Mentioned in some reviews as a book for ages 7 to 11, it can actually be enjoyed by younger children and adults as well.
